An 'offending' supertanker carrying more than 2 million barrels of crude oil exploded and caught fire after striking a naval mine in the southern region of the Strait of Hormuz, the Public Relations of the IRGC Navy claimed.
According to the official statement, the supertanker had turned off all of its radar and navigation systems and was attempting to exit through an unauthorized southern route in the Strait of Hormuz, ignoring repeated warnings issued by the IRGC Navy before hitting the mine.
Following the incident, the IRGC Navy issued a statement holding vessel owners and crews in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman fully accountable for navigating through unauthorized transit lanes.
The Iranian naval force alleged that any movement or activity that disregards the security and safety of the Strait of Hormuz will be met with decisive action.
