  • Kim Yo Jong claimed North Korea is considering deploying additional tactical weapons
  • Tensions remain elevated following a landmine explosion inside the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) last month

South Korea’s military warned on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, that it will respond with "stern punishment" to any additional provocations from North Korea, rejecting Pyongyang's claims that Seoul is responsible for escalating border tensions, according to AFP.

The statement follows remarks from Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who announced on Monday that Pyongyang is considering deploying additional tactical strike capabilities and resuming cross-border propaganda loudspeaker broadcasts.

Kim blamed South Korea for deteriorating security along the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), accusing South Korean forces of firing warning shots with automatic rifles and large-calibre machine guns between October 1 and October 17.

South Korean officials defended their operational responses, stating that the warning shots and loudspeaker broadcasts were legitimate, defensive actions taken to force North Korean troops from crossing the Military Demarcation Line.

Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Jin Young-sung described Pyongyang’s characterization of Seoul’s legitimate security measures as "unacceptable" and directed front-line troops to maintain strict military readiness.

Cross-border friction has intensified in recent months following a landmine explosion inside the DMZ last month that wounded three South Korean personnel. While Seoul has accused Pyongyang of violating the armistice agreement, North Korea has denied involvement in the incident and rejected South Korean calls for an official apology.
