- AI-generated images showing the Pink Panther amid protests in France have circulated widely on social media, depicting the cartoon character vandalizing surveillance cameras and carrying a rifle.
- BBC Verify confirmed the images were AI-generated, tracing them to an Instagram account specializing in fictional characters in protest settings.
Images depicting the Pink Panther taking part in recent protests in France have circulated widely on social media, attracting millions of views and drawing attention for their unusual portrayal of the cartoon character amid scenes of unrest.
The viral visuals show a person dressed in the iconic pink costume moving through protest scenes, vandalizing surveillance cameras, standing in front of riot police, and carrying a rifle. The images circulated alongside footage of demonstrations, clashes, and police deployments, placing the fictional character within the context of real unrest.
The contrast between the cartoon character’s familiar appearance and the violent scenes helped the images gain traction online, as users shared them across social media platforms.
The Pink Panther visuals were presented as scenes from the unrest in France, but they were not authentic photographs of events on the streets. They were AI-generated images designed to place a popular fictional character in chaotic protest settings.
The images originated from the Instagram account @aliframez, which publishes AI-generated artwork featuring well-known pop culture characters in fictional scenes of riots and disorder. Other creations on the account include characters such as Homer Simpson and the Teletubbies in similar settings.
The account’s creator told BBC Verify that the images were produced as an artistic project and were not intended to mislead the public or become viral. The original post was also labeled as AI-generated content.
BBC Verify examined the images using Google’s SynthID Detector, a tool designed to identify invisible digital watermarks embedded in content created with Google’s AI tools. A reverse image search also helped trace the visuals to the Instagram account.
The verification established that the Pink Panther images were fabricated, despite their circulation alongside reports and footage of actual demonstrations.
BBC Verify also noted that genuine footage from recent French protests had shown demonstrators dressed as other fictional characters, including Captain America and Superman.
The episode highlights how AI-generated visuals can circulate in connection with real events, making it harder for social media users to distinguish fabricated scenes from authentic protest footage. Even when an original post carries an AI label, that information may not remain visible when images are reposted or shared without context.
