  • Germany summoned Iran’s ambassador after a Hamburg court convicted two men of plotting to assassinate prominent Jewish and pro-‘Israeli’ figures on behalf of Tehran.
  • The court sentenced the Danish and Afghan nationals to eight-and-a-half years and four-and-a-half years in prison, respectively.

Germany has summoned Iran’s ambassador following the conviction of two men accused of plotting to assassinate prominent Jewish and pro-‘Israeli’ figures in Germany on behalf of Tehran.

Germany’s Foreign Ministry said the move came after a Hamburg court convicted a Danish national and an Afghan national last Thursday over plans to target Josef Schuster, head of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, and Volker Beck, president of the German-Israeli Society.

“The malicious assassination attempts … will have legal consequences,” the ministry said, warning that Iran would not be allowed to “threaten our free society.”

“We do not tolerate attacks on Jewish life and on those who defend it – anywhere, and certainly not in Germany,” the ministry added.

The Hamburg court sentenced the Danish national to eight-and-a-half years in prison and his Afghan accomplice to four-and-a-half years, according to reports on the verdict.

Prosecutors said the men had surveilled the intended targets as part of a plot allegedly linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force.

The case has heightened tensions between Berlin and Tehran, with Germany warning that alleged attempts to target people on its territory would carry serious legal and diplomatic consequences.
