Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy said Wednesday that a container ship carrying more than 2,500 containers sank in the southern waters of the Strait of Hormuz after striking a naval mine and catching fire.

In a statement, the IRGC Navy said the vessel was attempting to cross what it described as an unauthorized and dangerous route through the strategic waterway when it struck the mine, triggering an explosion and a severe fire.

The ship sank Wednesday morning due to the intensity of the blaze, according to the statement.

Iranian media released footage of what it says is the container ship sinking in the Strait of Hormuz.

“A container ship carrying 2,500 containers sank south of the Strait of Hormuz after hitting a naval mine and exploding, causing a massive fire,” Sepah News Agency, which is affiliated with the IRGC, said in its report.

The statement did not identify the ship, disclose its flag or provide information about its crew or possible casualties.

The incident comes amid heightened maritime tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency reported separate incidents involving a container ship and a tanker struck by unidentified projectiles on Tuesday.
