A tragedy in Erie, Pennsylvania, has left nine people dead, including a pregnant woman, young children, and the gunman, after a 45-year-old man killed eight people at his home before taking his own life, authorities announced Saturday.

Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah confirmed that the 45-year-old suspect was related to seven of the victims, while the eighth victim was a friend of the pregnant woman.

According to Lorah, audio and video evidence recovered by investigators revealed muffled gunshots coming from inside the home shortly before two distressed women arrived and began pounding on the door just before 5 p.m. Friday.

The gunman subsequently exited the residence and opened fire on both women as they ran toward him before retreating back inside.

Tactical response

Officers arrived at the residence within minutes after receiving an alert via ShotSpotter, an acoustic gunshot detection system utilizing artificial intelligence and microphone networks.

Police confirmed that all nine deaths occurred before officers arrived on the scene and that no additional gunfire was exchanged after law enforcement arrived. Chief Lorah clarified that loud noises heard during the standoff were flashbang chemical munitions deployed by SWAT officers rather than additional gunshots.

Upon deploying a drone and tactical robot to enter the home safely, officers discovered the bodies of a 5-year-old boy and a 1-year-old girl on the first floor, two women and two young men in a stairwell, and the shooter on the second floor.

"Out of respect for the victims and the families, I will not discuss the details of what our officers encountered inside that home," Lorah told reporters during a news conference. "But I want our community to understand the gravity of what happened and the profound impact this tragedy has had on those involved and on our community as a whole."

Motive under investigation

Chief Lorah declined to speculate on a motive but noted that investigators will analyze the cellphones of the two women killed outside, noting that they appeared to know something was happening inside the home prior to arriving.

District Attorney Elizabeth Hirz urged the public to refrain from circulating unverified claims: "Please do not allow rumors, speculation or unverified information to add to the pain that these families are already experiencing."

Erie Mayor Daria Devlin addressed the victims' families directly during the press conference, offering the city's support. "I am so deeply sorry. What happened to you was horrific, and there is nothing that any of us can say today that will make this any easier," Devlin said. "But you do need to know that our entire community is with you, we’re grieving with you. And we are here to support you."

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro offered the full backing of his administration to local officials. Speaking at a campaign event outside Philadelphia later in the day, Shapiro referenced both the Erie killings and a separate early Saturday shooting that injured two Philadelphia police officers.

"Today has been a dark day across this commonwealth," Shapiro said.
