Jerusalem home demolitions
The demolition comes amid a broader increase in Palestinian home demolitions and displacement in East Jerusalem. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said 98 Palestinian-owned structures had been demolished by ‘Israeli’ orders in East Jerusalem between the beginning of 2026 and April 27, displacing more than 230 people, including around 100 children.
More than half of those structures were demolished by their owners, who OCHA said did so in some cases to avoid higher fines and demolition costs.
OCHA said the demolitions are generally carried out over a lack of ‘Israeli’-issued building permits, which it described as nearly impossible for Palestinians to obtain in East Jerusalem and other areas under ‘Israeli’ control.
The UN has also reported a rise in forced evictions in areas including Silwan, where Palestinian families have faced eviction cases brought by settler organizations. In January, the UN said the pace of forced displacement in East Jerusalem was accelerating, alongside demolitions and settlement expansion.
