  • The demonstration brought together anti-war and pro-Palestinian protesters.
  • Footage captured by Ryad Aref shows police detaining demonstrators during the gathering.

Several demonstrators were detained by police during a protest in Berlin on German Unity Day, according to footage by Ryad Aref, which captured officers detaining protesters near the Brandenburg Gate.

The demonstration, held under the slogan “No to rearmament, compulsory military service and war, for peace, democratic rights and social security,” drew about 5,800 people by police estimates, while organizers said more than 20,000 attended.

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators were also present, carrying Palestinian flags and banners calling for an end to the war in Gaza, including messages such as “Stop the genocide in Gaza” and “Germany is complicit in genocide.” Police detained two people during the demonstration, according to Reuters.

The protests coincided with German Unity Day, Germany's national holiday marking the reunification of East and West Germany on Oct. 3, 1990. The day has been observed as a public holiday since reunification.

Berlin has also seen repeated demonstrations in support of Palestinians since the start of the war in Gaza, with previous gatherings resulting in clashes, detentions and disputes between protesters and police.
