  • The cubs died amid shortages of food, medicine and adequate veterinary care.
  • The shortages have been linked to the closure of Gaza’s border crossings and restrictions on supplies.

Four lion cubs have died at a zoo in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza amid shortages of food, medicine and the care needed to keep the animals alive, according to AFP.

The cubs, born to a lion and lioness at the zoo, died after the animals were left without adequate access to food and medicines.

The deaths came as Gaza’s border crossings remained blockaded by 'Israel', preventing the entry of supplies needed to care for animals at the zoo.

The lack of food and medicine has directly affected the animals’ health and ability to survive, highlighting the wider impact of shortages across Gaza.

The deaths of the four cubs add to the toll faced by animals kept in Gaza’s zoos, where access to basic supplies and veterinary care has been severely disrupted by the war.
