Parents had received messages from schools on Sunday saying schools would remain closed for the week, according to messages seen by AFP.
No official reason was given for the closure. The decision came amid heightened tensions in the Gulf and a series of attacks targeting Saudi Arabia by Yemen’s Houthis.
Saudi officials have not publicly commented on the school closures or on an order for schools to resume in-person teaching, AFP reported.
The Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthis said on Sunday that it had intercepted drones and ballistic missiles targeting the kingdom.
The strikes were the latest in a series of Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia since July, when renewed fighting ended a years-long truce and drew Yemen further into the wider regional conflict.
The United Nations Security Council has condemned the escalating attacks on Saudi Arabia, saying previous strikes had wounded civilians, including women and children.
