Teen shooter wounds 11 outside high school in western Turkey

• Turkish Justice Minister Akın Gürlek confirmed that the shooter's parents and grandfather were taken into custody as part of an investigation into parental supervision, gun storage, and prior bullying allegations.
• The shooting occurred just one day after Turkish authorities announced new security protocols and deployed tens of thousands of school supervisors following deadly school attacks earlier in the year.

A minor opened fire outside a vocational high school in western Turkey on Tuesday morning, injuring 11 students, two of them seriously, before being apprehended by police, officials said.

The attack occurred around 8:00 a.m. local time outside the İnci Üzmez Anatolian Technical High School in the Turgutlu district of Manisa province. 

According to local media, the suspect carried a shotgun along the street before opening fire on students heading to class. 

Police subsequently tackled the shooter to the ground near the school perimeter and taken into custody.

Turkish Justice Minister Akın Gürlek announced that prosecutors have launched a comprehensive investigation into the attack and confirmed that several members of the suspect's family have also been detained.

Taking to social media platform X, Gürlek emphasized that authorities would not tolerate any oversight: "When it comes to the safety of our children, it is impossible to overlook any negligence or irresponsibility," Gürlek wrote.

"How the weapon used in the attack came into the child's possession, the storage conditions of the weapon, the parents' duties of care and supervision, and the claims of peer bullying prior to the incident are being investigated thoroughly and from multiple angles."

Gürlek added that under recent legal amendments clarifying families' duties of supervision, "the mother, father, and the grandfather determined to have been involved in the use of the weapon used in the attack have also been taken into custody."

The shooting comes amid heightened public concern regarding youth violence and school security in Turkey. 

Following back-to-back school shootings earlier this year, the Turkish government pledged stricter controls on firearm access and introduced thousands of dedicated school grounds supervisors and police liaison officers for the current academic year.

The Ministry of Education confirmed that all classes at the school were immediately suspended for the day as emergency medical teams treated the wounded and transferred them to regional hospitals.
