Iran authorities say one dead after ship struck in Hormuz strait

One person was killed and three others were injured after an Iranian commercial vessel was struck early Sunday near Qeshm Island, Iranian authorities said, according to state television IRIB.

Amir Taymouri, the governor of Qeshm County, said the vessel was hit at around 5 AM local time in waters near Hengam Island and the Shib Deraz coast of Qeshm Island.

Iranian authorities described the incident as an attack by the "terrorist enemy," but no further details were immediately released and there was no claim of responsibility.

The incident occurred hours after the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency reported receiving information that a vessel had been hit by a projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz. 

It was not immediately clear whether the two incidents were connected.

Shipping in the region has faced growing risks amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States and ‘Israel’.
