- Iran condemns US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s remarks defending the war on Iran on the anniversary of 9/11.
- Tehran accuses Washington of hypocrisy over its definition of terrorism and responsibility for civilian casualties.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei has condemned US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s remarks on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks, in which he defended the US war on Iran.
Hegseth used the anniversary to defend US military actions, saying Washington was “still sending terrorists where they belong – to hell” in its war on Iran.
Responding on X, Baghaei accused Washington of applying a double standard to terrorism and military violence.
“The narrative advanced by the U.S. Secretary of [Defence] on the anniversary of 9/11 is riddled with fundamental contradictions: you cannot wage aggression, carry out cowardly assassinations, and inflict civilian casualties while simultaneously claiming exclusive authority to define terrorism and determine whose violence is legitimate,” Baghaei wrote.
Baghaei also rejected any connection between Iran and the perpetrators of the September 11 attacks.
“The perpetrators of 9/11 were not Iranians; they were the very same people whom the U.S. itself had armed, organised, or otherwise cultivated in the preceding decades,” he said.
