Jordan welcomes 12-nation ‘Israeli’ settlement trade ban

• The Ministry praised the multilateral step as an enforcement of international law and ICJ rulings against 'Israeli' land annexation and settler violence. 

The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates welcomed a joint declaration by 12 countries, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, affirming their commitment to adopting national measures and supporting European efforts to restrict trade with ‘Israeli’ settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Ambassador Fouad Al-Majali, the official spokesman for the Ministry, commended the landmark multilateral statement, emphasizing that the commitment by these Western governments to enforce trade restrictions directly upholds international legitimacy and reinforces the two-state solution pursuant to relevant UN Security Council resolutions. 

Al-Majali noted that these measures directly align with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334, which unequivocally condemns all 'Israeli' policies aimed at altering the demographic composition, character, and status of the Occupied Palestinian Territory since 1967, including occupied East Jerusalem.

"The decisions by these friendly countries to ban trade with illegal settlements constitute an important step reflecting an international commitment to implementing international legitimacy resolutions, chief among them Resolution 2334," Al-Majali emphasized.

Furthermore, the Ministry underscored that these trade restrictions honor the binding Advisory Opinion issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which definitively established the illegality of the Israeli military occupation, declared settlement construction null and void, and repudiated all de facto annexation measures in the occupied West Bank. 

The Ministry called upon the broader international community to follow the precedent set by the 12 nations.

"We call on the international community to take similar practical steps that translate commitment to international law into concrete actions, contributing to the cessation of illegal settlement activities and bolstering efforts to safeguard the rights of the brotherly Palestinian people," Al-Majali stated.

The Ministry concluded by reiterating Jordan’s firm determination to continue working alongside regional partners and international allies to end the Israeli military occupation, protect sovereign Palestinian rights, and enable the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 lines, with occupied East Jerusalem as its capital.
