Jordan welcomes UK settlement trade ban

• Jordan called on the international community to adopt similar measures. 

The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates issued an official statement on Tuesday welcoming the decision by the government of the United Kingdom to impose a trade ban on products originating from illegal 'Israeli' settlements in the occupied West Bank. 

The Ministry praised the British measures, which also target financial services, construction mechanisms, and corporate support that enable 'Israeli' settlement expansion or the building of new colonial outposts. 

The Ministry emphasized that the move is a crucial step fully aligned with international law and UN legitimacy resolutions, contributing directly to confronting illegal 'Israeli' expansionism and systematic settler violence. 

Ambassador Fouad Al-Majali, the official spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, stated that the British decision represents a major policy shift that underscores a commitment to international law, most notably UN Security Council Resolution 2334. Resolution 2334 explicitly condemns all 'Israeli' measures aimed at altering the demographic composition, character, and legal status of the Occupied Palestinian Territory since 1967, including occupied East Jerusalem. 

"The British government's decision constitutes an important step that reflects its commitment to international law and the enforcement of international legitimacy resolutions, foremost among them Security Council Resolution 2334," Al-Majali stated. 

Al-Majali added that the decision directly aligns with the Advisory Opinion issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which unequivocally declared the Israeli military occupation, settlement construction, and de facto land annexation across the occupied West Bank to be illegal and null.

Commending the UK's stance against ethnic cleansing

The Foreign Ministry warmly welcomed statements by British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, who reaffirmed the UK's commitment to protecting the two-state solution, supporting the Palestinian people's right to self-determination, and forcefully condemning extremist statements by ‘Israeli’ ministers aimed at erasing Palestinian presence in the West Bank.

The Ministry highlighted the UK Foreign Secretary's explicit characterization of actions taken by Israeli occupation forces and armed settler militias in parts of the West Bank as amounting to ethnic cleansing.

"We welcome the statements by the British Foreign Secretary confirming the UK government's keenness to safeguard the two-state solution, its support for the Palestinian people's right to self-determination, and its condemnation of statements by extremist Israeli government ministers... noting that what is taking place in several areas of the West Bank constitutes ethnic cleansing," the Ministry's statement read.

Call for international action

Spokesman Al-Majali called on the international community and global bodies to adopt similar tangible measures to translate international law commitments into practical enforcement. He stressed that severing economic and trade ties with the illegal settlement enterprise is essential to halting 'Israeli' colonial expansion and safeguarding Palestinian rights.

"We call upon the international community to take similar steps that translate commitment to international law and international legitimacy resolutions into practical measures, contributing to the cessation of illegal settlement activities and protecting the rights of the brotherly Palestinian people," Al-Majali urged.

The Ministry concluded by reiterating Jordan’s firm commitment to working alongside regional brothers and international allies to uphold the Palestinian people's right to freedom, end the Israeli military occupation, and establish an independent, sovereign Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 lines, with occupied East Jerusalem as its capital.
