Husband of slain activist slams US refusal to probe 'Israeli' killing

• US legal and investigative efforts remain frozen, according to Eygi’s husband Hamid Mazhar Ali.
• Eygi, 26, was shot dead in September 2024 while taking part in a protest against 'Israeli' settlement expansion in the West Bank.
• Her family has repeatedly called for an independent US investigation, but Washington has declined to launch one.

On the second anniversary of his wife’s killing, Hamid Mazhar Ali, husband of slain Turkish-American activist Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi, condemned the US government’s failure to investigate her death and hold ‘Israeli’ forces accountable. 

Speaking at a memorial ceremony at Eygi's graveside in Turkiye's southwestern Aydin province, Ali revealed that the legal and investigative process in Washington remains completely frozen, exactly where it stood on the day she was murdered.

Eygi, a 26-year-old volunteer with the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), was shot in the head by an 'Israeli' sniper on Sep. 6, 2024, during a peaceful protest against colonial settlement expansion in Beita, near Nablus. 

Despite continuous appeals from Eygi's family over the past two years, Washington has refused to launch an independent federal investigation into the targeted killing of its citizen. 

Comparing the enduring impunity to the 2003 murder of Rachel Corrie, the American peace activist crushed to death by an 'Israeli' military bulldozer in Gaza, Ali condemned Washington's hypocrisy in defending 'Israeli' war crimes. 

"I think this is an extremely hypocritical stance. But it is not surprising. We have seen this for the past 20 years, ever since Rachel Corrie. She was an American, born and raised in the US, and her parents were American too. Yet justice was not delivered for her either... Looking at America's approach toward Israel and its record of not holding it accountable, its talk about justice seems extremely hypocritical." 

Killing of Activists

Eygi’s killing came amid a wider toll on Palestinian human rights defenders. Front Line Defenders documented at least 31 Palestinian human rights defenders killed in 2023 and 2024, including nine in 2023 and 22 in 2024, with several killed in ‘Israeli’ airstrikes and other attacks. The organization has described the killings as part of a broader pattern of threats and attacks against Palestinian rights defenders.
