Public outcry erupted online following the release of video evidence showing former 'Israeli' military reservists dressed in keffiyehs posing as Palestinian students from Gaza in Manhattan's Washington Square Park.
The incident was detailed in a viral video by digital creator David Spevak, who documented how two men approached him while wearing keffiyehs and carrying Palestinian flags.
The men claimed to be Palestinian students from Gaza and attempted to force Spevak into a recorded exchange regarding the Palestinian resistance.
According to Spevak, the men showed him graphic images of October 7 victims and claimed to have committed horrific acts of violence, including sexual assault and murder, while pretending to speak as Palestinians.
"They tried to force me into a trap — support the resistance and be painted as supporting murder and rape, or reject it and be painted as opposing Palestinian freedom," Spevak stated in his broadcast. "They were literally manufacturing Palestinian hatred."
Operatives caught on video
After Spevak and accompanying bystanders realized the interaction was a coordinated setup, a companion began filming the two men while informing passersby that they were former 'Israeli' soldiers impersonating Palestinians.
As their cover was blown, video footage captured the two men walking to a park restroom, changing out of their keffiyehs, and returning to a nearby setup operated by the "Zahal Disabled Veterans Organization" and Frontline Advocates.
Frontline Advocates, co-founded by 'Israeli' attorney and IDF reservist Stav Cohen, sends delegations of former 'Israeli' soldiers to American college campuses and public parks, including Columbia University and NYU, to engage in public debates and create digital content.
"Manufactured" narrative tactics
The incident sparked swift backlash across social media platforms, with civil rights advocates and commentators condemning the practice of former foreign military personnel using staged impersonations on American soil to smear Palestinians.
In his closing remarks, Spevak urged viewers to share the footage and expose such deceptive campaigns.
"Palestinians have been dehumanized enough," Spevak said. "We can't allow IDF soldiers to take over their identities too. In order to change the narrative, you just need to stop killing people. It's that simple."
