  • The 44-year old political prisoner was not aware of the death of his parents during his captivity.

Minutes after his release on Thursday, Palestinian political prisoner, Hassan Arar of Ramallah, learned that both of his parents had passed away during his 22-year long captivity.

Arar, who is 44 years old, was not aware his parents, alongside two of his siblings, had passed away while he was in prison.

The ex-detainee was transferred to the hospital upon his release from the notorious Gilboa prison, where he was treated for injuries resulting from ‘Israeli’ beatings while he was detained.

Upon being told his parents have died, Arar burst out in tears.

More than 9,000 Palestinians are currently detained in ‘Israeli’ prisons, which “since the onset of the genocide [have] degenerated into a laboratory of calculated cruelty,” according to Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967.

Prisoners, especially those placed in solitary confinement like Arar, are isolated from the world around them, with many finding out multiple family members have passed during their confinement.
