Iran and Oman have outlined a proposal to jointly establish a temporary shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz following weeks of negotiations, according to statements from the two countries’ foreign ministries.
The proposal includes a “phased framework” for a joint project aimed at facilitating a temporary shipping corridor and clearing mines from the waterway.
The two sides will continue discussions “with the aim of reaching agreement on a permanent shipping corridor and the future administration of the Strait,” according to the statement.
Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi traveled to Iran and held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
Following the meeting, Al Busaidi said he was “hopeful” that the two countries would soon announce a temporary corridor.
“Future management of the Strait and a permanent solution will follow in due course,” he said, adding that discussions with regional partners would support “peace and cooperation, stability and freedom of navigation.”
Tehran and Muscat have spent recent weeks negotiating measures to stabilize shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route that has become a major pressure point in stalled US-Iran talks.
The proposed corridor comes as Washington maintains pressure over navigation through the waterway.
US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that all mines in the Strait of Hormuz had been removed or detonated. He also warned that any boats attempting to deploy additional mines would be destroyed.
“We are watching every square inch of the strait,” Trump said.
The proposed Iran-Oman corridor could provide a temporary mechanism for restoring shipping through the waterway while negotiations continue over a longer-term arrangement for navigation and administration of the strait.
