‘Israeli’ tourist released on €10,000 bail over Crete wildfire

A 35-year-old ‘Israeli’ tourist has been conditionally released on €10,000 bail after being detained in Crete over a wildfire that Greek authorities suspect was sparked by a barbecue.

The man was arrested on suspicion of negligent arson after a fire broke out near Sellia, in the Rethymno area of southern Crete. Greek media reported that the barbecue was allegedly lit at a rented villa despite warnings that outdoor grilling was prohibited because of the high fire risk.

According to reports, the fire began in the villa's yard before strong winds carried sparks into nearby dry vegetation, allowing the blaze to spread.

More than 60 firefighters were deployed to tackle the fire, supported by specialist wildfire units, firefighting vehicles and aircraft. Greece's emergency service also issued evacuation alerts for nearby communities. Firefighters brought the blaze under control after about four hours.

The case comes amid a severe wildfire season in Greece, where authorities have imposed strict restrictions on activities capable of producing sparks during periods of elevated fire risk.

Following his detention, the tourist was released on €10,000 bail and placed under judicial supervision pending trial.

Under the conditions of his release, he must report to the Greek diplomatic mission in Tel Aviv during the first five days of every month until the case is heard.

The allegations against him have not been finally determined by a court.
