  • Users have accused Google’s AI Overview of displaying a double standard in responses to similar searches involving Muslims and ‘Israelis’.
  • Screenshots circulating online show the AI using safety-related language for a query about being alone with a Muslim, while giving a more neutral response to the same query about an ‘Israeli’.

Google’s artificial intelligence system is facing accusations of Islamophobic bias after users highlighted what they described as a stark difference in its responses to similar searches involving Muslims and ‘Israelis’.

Screenshots shared online show different responses to the queries “am alone with a Muslim” and “am alone with an ‘Israeli’.”

In response to the query involving a Muslim, Google’s AI Overview reportedly warns that if the user is “feeling unsafe or facing an emergency,” they should leave the area or seek help.

The response also reportedly advises the user to treat the Muslim person with “standard human respect.”

By contrast, when the same search is made about an ‘Israeli’, the AI reportedly responds that “‘an ‘Israeli’ person is an individual, just like anyone else,” encouraging users to focus on shared humanity.

The contrasting responses have sparked criticism online, with users questioning why simply being alone with a Muslim appears to trigger language associated with danger or an emergency, while the same framing does not appear in the response concerning an ‘Israeli’.

The screenshots have renewed concerns about how AI-powered search systems handle sensitive questions involving religion, nationality and identity.

The examples circulating online do not establish why Google’s system generated the different responses or whether the results are reproducible across users, locations or search sessions.

However, critics say the contrasting language warrants scrutiny because associating a Muslim person with a potential safety threat, while treating an ‘Israeli’ person as an ordinary individual, can reinforce discriminatory stereotypes.

Google has faced previous scrutiny over inaccurate or problematic AI-generated search responses, highlighting the challenges of ensuring that automated systems provide consistent and non-discriminatory answers on sensitive subjects.
