Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has dismissed President Donald Trump’s latest threat of a sweeping economic campaign against Iran, saying the strategy is destined to fail.
“This repetitive film is also doomed to failure,” Araghchi said in response to Trump’s threat to impose what he described as the “most crushing economic operation ever” against Iran.
Araghchi pointed to previous US efforts to pressure Tehran, including sanctions imposed during the administration of former President Barack Obama.
“Fourteen years ago, the US threatened ‘the most crippling sanctions in history.’ It failed,” he said.
The reference was to the multilateral sanctions strategy pursued by the Obama administration between 2010 and 2012, which targeted Iran’s financial sector and oil exports in an effort to pressure Tehran into negotiations over its nuclear program.
Araghchi also pointed to Trump’s first administration, which withdrew the United States from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal in 2018 and subsequently reimposed sweeping sanctions on Tehran.
The Iranian foreign minister also criticized US demands for Iran’s “unconditional surrender” during the war launched by the United States and ‘Israel’ earlier this year.
“Today: ‘The most devastating economic operation in history.’ This too is doomed to failure,” Araghchi said.
“We’ve seen this movie before; the same old story, just with different bullies,” he added.
The remarks came as tensions between Tehran and Washington remain high, with the Trump administration threatening further economic pressure on Iran while Iranian officials continue to reject demands they consider unacceptable.
