The US Justice Department has charged 17 Iranian nationals over an alleged widespread cyber campaign targeting universities, companies and government agencies in the United States and abroad.

According to the department, the suspects targeted 144 US universities, 178 foreign universities, 42 companies and government agencies as part of an effort to steal sensitive information.

US authorities said the alleged attacks resulted in the theft of more than 31 terabytes of academic data and intellectual property.

The Justice Department also said some of the hacking operations were carried out on behalf of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Iranian government entities and universities.

The charges are part of a broader US effort to investigate and prosecute cyber operations that Washington attributes to Iranian state-linked actors.
