  • Iranian Army chief Maj. Gen. Amir Hatami sharply criticized Donald Trump over remarks about the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Hatami said US forces had been "effectively driven out" of the region and would not be allowed to restore their previous military presence.

Iranian Army commander Maj. Gen. Amir Hatami has criticized US President Donald Trump over his remarks about the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iran's IRIB.

"Joking about such remarks is a major mistake, because this is Iran, and it has defenders who will break your legs," Hatami said.

He said US forces had been "effectively driven out" and would no longer be permitted to enter the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman or the Strait of Hormuz.

Hatami also said US military bases would not be allowed to return to their previous status.

"Iran will never allow this," he said.

Hatami's remarks came after Trump threatened to turn the strategic Strait of Hormuz into US territory.

The waterway is a critical global energy route, with a significant share of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas shipments traditionally passing through it.

The exchange comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran and continued disputes over control of the waterway.
