Judiciary chief to 'simple-minded’ Trump: Iran is owner and ruler of Strait of Hormuz

Iran’s Judiciary chief Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i has dismissed US President Donald Trump’s remarks about claiming ownership of the Strait of Hormuz, saying the Islamic Republic is the “owner and ruler” of the strategic waterway.

In a social media post on Saturday, Mohseni-Eje’i described Trump’s comments as “nonsense and falsehoods,” saying they reflected what he called the US president’s “delusions.”

“In reality, the owner and ruler of this important global waterway is the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he said.

Mohseni-Eje’i’s remarks came after Trump said the United States could declare the Strait of Hormuz US territory after defeating Iran.

The Iranian judiciary chief said Tehran had demonstrated its control over the waterway through military action and warned that any attempt to challenge Iran in the strait would end in the defeat of the aggressor.

He also argued that Iran’s claim over the waterway was supported by international law and principles of national sovereignty.

“Trump and his advisers must know that the boots of arrogance will never tread on the Strait of Hormuz,” Mohseni-Eje’i said.

Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz as part of its response to the US-‘Israeli’ war of aggression, saying it would keep the strategic waterway closed until its demands are met.

Earlier in August, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said reopening the strait was conditional on several measures, including a permanent end to US aggression against Iran and its regional allies, the lifting of the US naval blockade and sanctions, the return of frozen Iranian assets, and compensation for damage caused by the aggression.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global energy route linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman. Continued restrictions on shipping through the waterway have sharply reduced maritime traffic and raised concerns over global energy supplies.
