'Israel' is holding dozens of Hamas operatives following allegations that they attempted to infiltrate local Palestinian militias cooperating with 'Israeli' forces in the Gaza Strip, according to a report by the i24 news network.

According to the report, Hamas has periodically dispatched operatives to integrate into militia ranks in order to collect intelligence and target leadership figures within these local security groups.

Abu Shabaab militia targeted

The infiltration campaign primarily focused on the Abu Shabaab militia, which is described in the report as one of the most effective and established local formations currently operating in the Gaza Strip.

The report noted that in one specific instance, an operative managed to get within close proximity of carrying out an assassination before being intercepted and arrested by security forces just prior to the attack.

Interrogations underway

All detained suspects remain in 'Israeli' custody and have been subjected to interrogation by the Shin Bet security service.

'Israeli' authorities are currently reviewing the findings of the interrogations to determine whether to move forward with formal prosecution against the suspects.
