The US military said Tuesday that it intercepted a barrage of missiles launched by Iran, marking the first reported escalation in hostilities between the two sides in several days.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement on X that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched multiple ballistic missiles from Iranian territory in what it described as an attempted surprise attack against US forces stationed in the Middle East.

“At 5:45 p.m. Eastern Time today, Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces launched multiple ballistic missiles from Iran in an attempt to conduct a surprise attack against US forces stationed in the Middle East,” CENTCOM said.

The command added that “all Iranian missiles were successfully intercepted,” without providing further details on the locations targeted or the systems used in the interceptions.
