IMF chief praises Argentina’s economic progress under Milei

• IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva praises Argentina’s economic recovery under President Javier Milei, citing greater stability after sweeping austerity reforms.

International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva on Monday praised Argentina’s improved economic situation since President Javier Milei took office in 2023, saying the country has achieved greater stability after years of economic turmoil.

Georgieva made the remarks during a visit to Argentina, the IMF’s largest debtor, where she met with Milei and senior government officials. The Washington-based institution has repeatedly expressed support for Milei’s economic reform agenda since he assumed power.

"What we have today, according to all indicators, is a much more stable situation" compared with the conditions in 2023, Georgieva said during a joint press conference with Argentine Economy Minister Luis Caputo.

Milei campaigned on promises to revive Argentina’s economy through sweeping spending cuts, reducing the fiscal deficit and bringing down inflation.

His government’s austerity measures have faced strong opposition, triggering repeated protests over cuts to public services, subsidies and government spending.

Georgieva said Argentina’s "much stronger situation" was the result of "the hard work carried out by the government" as well as "the sacrifices of the Argentine people."

During her two-day visit, the IMF chief is also scheduled to meet with Argentine Central Bank President Santiago Bausili, along with representatives from the business community and academic sector.

The visit comes as Milei’s administration continues efforts to stabilize the economy and secure international confidence while facing domestic challenges over the social impact of its reform policies.
