  • Khalil al-Hayya delivers his first public statement since being elected Hamas leader.
  • He pledges to work to alleviate suffering in Gaza and says defending the occupied West Bank is a responsibility.

Khalil al-Hayya, the newly elected leader of Hamas, outlined the movement’s priorities in his first statement since his appointment, saying they include ending ‘Israeli’ aggression and achieving national unity.

"I affirm a number of priorities, the first of which is the comprehensive cessation of Israeli aggression," al-Hayya said.

He added that restoring what he described as a dignified life for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip is among Hamas’s priorities, calling it an "inherent right" for the people.

"We will continue to act on all fronts for the sake of Gaza, the West Bank, Jerusalem and the prisoners," he said.

Al-Hayya also highlighted national unity as a key objective, saying: "Our priority is also to achieve national unity, and for that reason we extend our hands to everyone."
