Tenseness and localized clashes flared in the heart of the Argentine capital late Sunday night as groups of supporters clashed with police forces following La Albiceleste's agonizing 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

The unrest took place around the historic Obelisco on Avenida 9 de Julio, the traditional landmark where thousands of fans had gathered to watch the match broadcast on giant public screens.

Spain lifts second World Cup

The showpiece final, hosted at the New York New Jersey Stadium (MetLife Stadium) in the United States, was decided in dramatic fashion deep in extra time.

Following a grueling 0-0 deadlock throughout 90 minutes of regulation, Spanish forward Ferran Torres struck the winning goal in the 106th minute (the second period of extra time).

The goal sealed Spain's second World Cup title -adding to their maiden victory in 2010- and officially prevented Argentina from retaining the crown they won in Qatar.

Riot police disperse crowds

In Buenos Aires, the atmosphere shifted rapidly from anxious anticipation to hostility following the final whistle. While the majority of the massive crowd reacted with quiet disappointment, volatile pockets of fans turned rowdy.

Reports from the ground noted individuals hurling projectiles, bottles, and various objects toward security perimeters, alongside attempts by some to breach restricted zones surrounding the monument.

In response, heavy riot police units moved directly into the central plaza, utilizing water cannons and tear gas canisters to disperse the crowds and clear the surrounding avenues to restore public order.
