Several explosions were heard across Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, late Saturday into Sunday, according to AFP reporters, after the Ukrainian Air Force warned of an incoming ballistic missile attack.

An AFP journalist reported that one of the blasts was powerful enough to trigger car alarms in central Kyiv. The explosions came moments after Ukraine’s Air Force issued a warning on Telegram that ballistic missiles were heading toward the capital.

Kyiv’s military administration said a residential building was hit in the city’s Shevchenkivskyi district, while a shopping and entertainment centre was damaged in the Dniprovskyi district. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a house caught fire in the Sviatoshynskyi district.

Russia has carried out near-daily drone and missile attacks on Kyiv since launching its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The strikes came a day after Ukraine carried out drone attacks targeting warehouses belonging to a major Russian e-commerce company in the Moscow and Tambov regions, killing eight people and triggering large fires, according to Russian officials.

In Ukraine, Russian strikes killed five people and wounded around 20 others in southeastern regions on Saturday.

Ukraine has intensified attacks on Russian territory in recent months, describing them as “long-range retaliation” for years of Russian bombardment of Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.

The Ukrainian strikes have targeted Russian oil infrastructure, contributing to fuel shortages in one of the world’s largest oil-producing countries.
