More than 500 newborns in Peru have been named after Norwegian superstar Erling Haaland, according to data released by the country’s National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (Reniec).

The surge in Haaland-inspired names coincides with the forward’s impressive showing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Norway advanced deep into the tournament.

Haaland netted seven goals, nearly matching Kylian Mbappé’s tally and more than doubling Cristiano Ronaldo’s, captivating fans worldwide.

Reniec figures show 486 children registered with “Haaland” as part of their name, 91 named “Erling Haaland,” and four given the full “Erling Braut Haaland,” incorporating the maternal surname featured on his World Cup jersey.

“Different football stars serve as inspiration for Peruvians to register their children with these names,” registry spokesperson Ivan Torres told Panamericana Television.

Haaland’s larger-than-life persona and energetic demeanor have fueled his popularity.

Social media users have embraced the Viking comparisons while highlighting his approachable vibe.

Peru’s football passion extends beyond Haaland. Reniec data reveals thousands named after global icons: 33,809 after Neymar, 3,402 after Lionel Messi, and 1,185 after Ronaldo.

Other 2026 World Cup stars like Antoine Griezmann (1,502), Lamine Yamal (1,241), and Mohamed Salah (319) also inspired names.
