The Saudi-led military coalition announced on Monday that its air defense forces successfully intercepted a volley of ballistic missiles launched by Iran-backed Houthi forces from Yemen.

The incoming aerial threats were aimed directly at the southern region of the Saudi kingdom.

The cross-border missile engagement marks a sharp increase in regional hostilities, with geopolitical tensions rising significantly after a recent attack targeted the airport in the Houthi-controlled capital of Sanaa.

The incoming ballistic threats triggered defense systems across the kingdom's southern territory. Military units successfully locked onto and neutralized the missiles before they could reach their intended destination.

In an official update published on social media, coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki confirmed the successful defensive engagement.

"Air defences intercepted a ballistic missile threat launched by the terrorist Houthi militia towards the southern region," al-Maliki stated, validating that the incoming munitions had been completely destroyed in mid-flight.

Houthis confirm strike

The military spokesperson for the Houthi movement announced on Monday that their forces launched a coordinated strike using a volley of ballistic missiles and explosive drones targeting Saudi Arabia's Abha International Airport.

According to the Houthi command, the operation was executed in direct retaliation for a recent military attack that targeted Sanaa International Airport. In a sharp escalation of threats to regional transit, the military spokesperson issued a stern warning advising all commercial airline companies to immediately cease flying through Saudi Arabian airspace until the blockade on Sanaa's airport is fully lifted.
