A shooting involving US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel left one person dead on Monday morning, prompting state officials and local advocacy groups to demand answers.

Maine State House Speaker Ryan Fecteau confirmed the fatality on Monday, noting that state law enforcement agencies had immediately mobilized to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deadly confrontation.

Police secure the scene

The tactical response began early Monday morning when the local police department in Biddeford, Maine, received emergency reports regarding active gunfire.

Units responded to the intersection of Pool and Hill streets, where they discovered the scene involving the federal ICE personnel.

In an official statement, the Biddeford Police Department confirmed its officers were actively providing security and maintaining a perimeter at the intersection.

However, local municipal authorities declined to comment on the specific actions of the federal agents, directing all press and public inquiries regarding the active investigation directly to ICE.

Advocacy groups, state officials react

The individual killed in the shooting was identified as a local youth by Project Relief Maine, a prominent regional immigrant advocacy group.

The organization issued a statement on social media expressing grief and calling for institutional accountability.

"We are in contact with the family and are committed to supporting them during this unimaginable time," the group stated. "This was a young person whose life was cut short, and our community must come together to stand with their loved ones and ensure they are not alone. They must get justice."

As tensions grew, Speaker Fecteau announced via Facebook that the Maine State Police alongside the state Department of Public Safety were physically on the scene gathering details. Fecteau noted that he did not immediately have any further information to provide as the initial multi-agency assessment continues.
