  • Russian missile strikes shake Kyiv as Zelensky urges NATO allies to boost air defences.

A series of explosions rocked Kyiv late Tuesday into Wednesday as Russia continued its attacks on the Ukrainian capital, coinciding with a NATO leaders’ meeting in Turkey.

AFP journalists in Kyiv reported hearing a powerful explosion before air raid sirens were activated, followed by four additional blasts across the city.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a missile strike hit warehouses in one district, while a fire broke out in a "non-residential building" in another area.

"The enemy is attacking the capital with ballistic missiles. Stay in shelters!" Klitschko wrote on social media.

Deadly strikes continue

The latest attack came after Russian strikes on Kyiv on Monday killed 30 people, according to Ukrainian officials.

Speaking from Ankara, where he is attending the NATO summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on allies to strengthen Ukraine’s air defence capabilities, warning that Kyiv faces shortages of interceptor missiles needed to counter Russian attacks.

Ukraine faces missile defence challenges

While Ukraine has managed to repel waves of Russian drone attacks, officials say the country is struggling to counter Moscow’s growing use of large-scale ballistic missile barrages against Kyiv.

The attacks come as Ukraine’s air defence systems face increasing pressure amid declining stocks of interceptor missiles and intensified Russian strikes on the capital.
