  • Jordan says it has implemented contingency plans to safeguard water security and ensure uninterrupted supplies.
  • Officials say the National Carrier Project remains a long-term solution, expected to provide 300 million cubic meters of water annually.

Jordan's Ministry of Water and Irrigation says it has prepared and begun implementing contingency plans to ensure the continued supply of water across the Kingdom, describing water security as a top national priority.

In a statement addressing reports about purchasing additional water from 'Israel', a ministry source said the government had developed alternative scenarios since last year to guarantee uninterrupted water supplies and protect the national interest.

The source stressed that Jordan continues to receive its national water rights under the peace treaty while advancing a series of emergency measures to reduce shortages.

The plans include rehabilitating and increasing the output of existing wells, drilling new wells in cooperation with the private sector, expanding the use of non-conventional water sources such as brackish wells, and intensifying efforts to curb illegal water extraction.

According to the ministry, these measures have helped recover additional water supplies and reduce part of the country's drinking water deficit.

The ministry also said it is continuing efforts to finalize the financial closure of the National Carrier Project in coordination with relevant authorities before construction begins.

Once completed, the project is expected to supply 300 million cubic meters of water annually, covering most of Jordan's water needs and helping address the Kingdom's long-standing water shortage.
