  • JD Vance said Washington and Tehran could work together for “peace and prosperity” after talks in Switzerland, despite deep tensions.

US Vice President JD Vance said on Sunday that Washington and Tehran could “work together to promote peace and prosperity,” describing recent talks in Switzerland as a potential turning point in relations between the two countries despite long-running tensions.

Speaking at a live press conference after the talks, Vance said US President Donald Trump had asked his team to “turn over a new leaf” in Washington’s relationship with Iran and pursue a diplomatic path to address regional disputes.

“We see a future together where everyone can work together to promote peace and prosperity,” Vance said, adding that Trump had empowered US officials to seek “a diplomatic solution to a host of issues” in the Middle East.

Vance said progress had been made during the latest round of talks and suggested the discussions could pave the way for broader engagement between the two sides.

“The question is whether we can change relations in the Middle East permanently,” he said.

Despite the conciliatory tone, Vance also accused Iran of being a “driver of regional instability,” underscoring the deep divisions that remain between Washington and Tehran even as negotiations continue.

He said Trump was committed to securing a “full regional ceasefire” and pointed to what he described as progress in efforts to maintain a truce in Lebanon.

“We’ve seen great progress over the last couple of days in ensuring the ceasefire in Lebanon holds,” Vance said, while cautioning that such ceasefires are often “a little bit messy.”

Vance said the technical negotiations under way may not resolve every dispute immediately, but could create a foundation for direct engagement between the two sides.

“The technical negotiations may not solve every disagreement, but it will allow us to sit together as teams for the first time in history,” he said.
