Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho has signed with Ravenna FC, a third-tier Italian club competing in Serie C, marking a surprise end to his retirement more than a decade after his last professional appearance.
The 46-year-old World Cup winner and former Ballon d’Or recipient last played competitively for Fluminense in 2015. News of the agreement broke on 20 June, generating widespread attention across global football media.
The move represents a multifaceted partnership. Ronaldinho will primarily contribute in a marketing and ambassadorial capacity, leveraging his global profile to elevate the club’s visibility.
Club officials have indicated he may participate in pre-season training and friendly matches, and reports suggest he will acquire minority shareholder status.
An official unveiling event is scheduled for 23 June in Miami.
Ravenna FC, which narrowly missed promotion last season, views the signing as a significant strategic coup. Club owner Ignazio Cipriani, a longtime admirer of Ronaldinho, described the deal as an extraordinary opportunity to make a statement.
Honorary vice-president Ariedo Braida, who previously signed Ronaldinho for AC Milan in 2008, confirmed the Brazilian icon’s involvement while noting regulatory limitations.
Braida clarified that Ronaldinho will not feature in competitive Serie C matches during the 2026-27 season due to age restrictions.
“Ronaldinho will do a marketing event with us, but he won’t play for Ravenna in Serie C next season,” he stated.
Ronaldinho expressed enthusiasm for the new chapter. “Football has always been a source of joy for me, and I want to bring that same spirit to Ravenna,” he remarked.
The signing revives interest in one of football’s most celebrated entertainers, known for his flair, creativity, and pivotal role in Brazil’s 2002 World Cup triumph.
