The US Department of Homeland Security says it has arrested the alleged “mastermind” behind a planned drone-based attack targeting a public event at the White House.
In an official statement, the department identified the suspect as Abraham Alvarez, a 31-year-old Mexican national who reportedly entered the United States as a child and later received Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) protections after overstaying a tourist visa in 2001.
According to federal charges cited by the department, Alvarez is one of five suspects accused of participating in a coordinated conspiracy targeting President Donald Trump and senior government officials during a mixed martial arts event held on the White House South Lawn.
Officials allege the plan involved the use of explosives-laden drones intended to detonate over crowds, followed by a secondary attack on fleeing civilians. The plot was reportedly disrupted by the FBI and local law enforcement before it could be carried out.
A senior Homeland Security official said Alvarez would face federal prosecution and deportation proceedings, adding that investigations are ongoing into more than 20 additional suspects allegedly linked to the case.
Authorities said those arrested could face life imprisonment if convicted, as the inquiry continues.
