  • Axios reports Washington and Tehran are set to hold nuclear negotiations during a ceasefire period.
  • Proposed understandings reportedly include reopening the Strait of Hormuz and easing sanctions in exchange for Iranian commitments.

The United States and Iran are preparing to launch nuclear negotiations during a ceasefire period as part of a broader memorandum of understanding that also addresses regional security issues, Axios reported, citing sources.

According to the report, the proposed framework includes a mechanism for handling Iran's stockpile of enriched uranium and a 60-day extension of the ceasefire, including in Lebanon.

The understandings would also reportedly provide for a reduction in sanctions on Tehran, contingent on Iran fulfilling its commitments under the agreement.

Axios said the proposal calls for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic without transit fees.

The report also cited a US source as saying that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently contacted individuals close to President Donald Trump's administration in an effort to obtain information about the course of the negotiations.

US officials told Axios that the preliminary agreement emerged from talks facilitated by a Qatari mediator and involving Iran's foreign minister.
