A cargo vessel successfully defended itself against an armed approach by a small craft carrying six individuals approximately 88 nautical miles southwest of Balhaf, Yemen, early today, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).

The incident occurred around 04:30 UTC when the small craft closed in on the vessel. An exchange of fire ensued between the attackers and the ship’s onboard armed security team, after which the craft turned away.

The vessel’s master reported no injuries or damage, and authorities are investigating. UKMTO has urged vessels in the area to transit with caution and report suspicious activity.

This event comes amid the persistent maritime security risks in the waters off Yemen, even as large-scale Houthi attacks on commercial shipping have largely subsided since the Gaza ceasefire in late 2025.

The Iran-backed Houthis had previously conducted over 100 attacks between late 2023 and October 2025, using missiles, drones, and small boats, disrupting global trade through the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Tensions have risen again amid the broader Iran-‘Israel’ conflict. The Houthis issued fresh threats in early June to target ‘Israeli’-linked shipping and potentially disrupt Red Sea navigation.
