New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said that he will not attend Sunday’s “Israel Day” on Fifth parade, making him the first sitting mayor in more than 60 years to skip the annual event.

The parade, which traces its roots to 1964, is one of the city’s most visible Jewish community gatherings.

Speaking at a briefing with NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, Mamdani said his decision follows a campaign pledge and reflects his criticism of the ‘Israeli’ government.

He said the choice would not affect the city’s duty to protect the event.

“While I will not be attending, our administration has been preparing for weeks to ensure the parade is safe for all those who take part,” Mamdani said in the city transcript.

He added that he takes seriously his responsibility for “the safety and well-being of every New Yorker.”

Tisch said the NYPD will deploy a large security presence along Fifth Avenue, including uniformed officers, counterterrorism personnel and other specialized units.

The mayor’s office said there are no current known specific or credible threats.

The parade is scheduled to run Sunday, May 31, along Fifth Avenue from 62nd Street to 74th Street, according to local coverage.

This year’s theme is “Proud Americans, Proud Zionists.”

The decision has drawn sharp attention because New York mayors have typically taken part in the parade for decades.
