'Israeli' and Lebanese military officials are expected to hold their first security talks later today in Washington, DC, as diplomatic efforts continue to stall amid ongoing 'Israeli' military operations in southern Lebanon, the Associated Press reported.

The meeting comes despite a recently extended ceasefire agreement reached in mid-April, which has failed to halt hostilities on the ground. 'Israeli' forces have continued and in some areas intensified their operations in southern Lebanon, including advances deeper into Lebanese territory and renewed evacuation orders instructing residents of southern border areas to move north.

According to Lebanon’s leading daily newspaper An-Nahar, the outcome of the US-sponsored direct military discussions at the Pentagon remains uncertain, with the paper describing it as “not easy” to predict what the talks might produce.

In a statement posted on social media, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said that “nothing can justify” 'Israel’s' continued “assaults” on southern Lebanon. He added that such actions “only strengthen our resolve for the necessity of an immediate ceasefire, working toward a complete 'Israeli' withdrawal from our land, and extending the State’s authority over all its territories.”

The talks are being closely watched as regional tensions remain high, with both sides facing mounting international pressure to de-escalate and return to negotiated frameworks.
