South Korea's military said North Korea on Tuesday launched an "unidentified projectile" toward the Yellow Sea, off the western coast of the Korean Peninsula.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement that "the North launched an unidentified projectile toward the West Sea," referring to the Yellow Sea between the Korean Peninsula and China.

The statement provided no further details.

The launch came after recent reports by South Korea's Yonhap news agency, citing government sources, suggested Chinese President Xi Jinping could visit South Korea later this week.

Neither country has confirmed the visit so far.

In early April, Pyongyang conducted several short-range ballistic missile tests aimed at "verifying the characteristics and power of a cluster bomb warhead," according to state media.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in mid-May called for strengthening frontline military units to confront the "sworn enemy," South Korea, the North's official news agency reported.

The two neighboring countries remain technically at war, as their 1953 conflict ended with an armistice rather than a peace treaty.
