  • 'Israeli' Defense Minister Israel Katz accused 18-year-old football star Lamine Yamal of what he claimed "inciting hatred" against 'Israel'.
  • Katz explicitly tagged FC Barcelona, demanding the club distance itself from the player's recent social media activity.

'Israeli' Defense Minister Israel Katz took to social media on Thursday to launch a scathing critique of Spanish football player Lamine Yamal.

The dispute centers on recent messages shared by the FC Barcelona winger, which Katz characterized as a direct incitement against 'Israel' and the Jewish people.

In a statement on X, Katz linked Yamal’s rhetoric to the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the alleged trauma of the October 7 attacks.

"Lamine Yamal chose to incite against Israel and foment hatred while our soldiers are fighting the terrorist organization Hamas," Katz wrote, listing the alleged atrocities committed during the initial outbreak of the war.

Demand for club accountability

Katz’s ire was not directed solely at the player. Katz pivoted to FC Barcelona, calling for immediate disciplinary or corrective action.

"I expect a great and respected club like @FCBarcelona to distance itself from these statements and make it unequivocally clear that there is no place for incitement or for support of terrorism," Katz stated.

'Israeli' government has increasingly focused on "digital diplomacy," targeting high-profile influencers and athletes who use their platforms to criticize military operations or support Palestinian causes.

By targeting Yamal -a global icon with a massive Gen Z following- Katz is signaling that the Defense Ministry views sports-based activism as a frontline in the war of public opinion.

FC Barcelona and Yamal's response

As of Thursday afternoon, neither Lamine Yamal nor FC Barcelona has issued a formal response to the Minister's demands.

The club has historically maintained a policy of supporting players' freedom of expression while distancing the corporate brand from specific political conflicts, but the direct intervention of a national Defense Minister may force a change in strategy.
