  • Gulf states and Jordan urge UN to reject Iran’s unilateral claims over the Strait of Hormuz.

A coalition of six Arab states has called on the United Nations to reject Iran’s recent declarations asserting new “administration” and legal rules over the Strait of Hormuz, warning that the move threatens maritime law and regional stability.

In a letter submitted to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the UN Security Council on Wednesday, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Jordan condemned what they described as Tehran’s “escalation” and “rejected allegations” of unilateral control over the strategic waterway, according to the Bahrain News Agency.

The coalition stressed that “no single country … may claim the right to impose unilateral administration” over the strait, one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes.

The letter outlined six demands, including the immediate withdrawal of Iran’s claims, the unconditional reopening of the waterway, and compensation for what it described as damages caused by Iranian actions.

The statement also referenced a recent drone attack on an Emirati ADNOC tanker, describing it as a “flagrant violation” of UN Security Council Resolution 2817, a binding measure adopted in March 2026 that condemns Iranian missile and drone strikes against Gulf states and Jordan and prohibits interference with navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran has not yet publicly responded to the letter.
