  • UK to deploy warship, jets and drones for multinational defensive mission securing Strait of Hormuz amid rising tensions.

The United Kingdom has announced it will deploy a warship, fighter jets and autonomous drone systems to join a multinational defensive mission aimed at securing shipping in the Strait of Hormuz amid heightened regional tensions and disruptions to global energy flows.

Defense Minister John Healey confirmed the commitment during a virtual summit with more than 40 counterparts from countries participating in the mission, saying it would become operational once conditions allow. He described the initiative as “defensive, independent, and credible.”

Under the plan, Britain will contribute the warship HMS Dragon, Typhoon fighter jets, and autonomous mine-hunting equipment designed to detect and clear naval mines. The package also includes counter-drone systems and high-speed unmanned vessels to support maritime security operations.

London said the deployment will be backed by £115 million ($155.53 million) in new funding aimed at strengthening naval mine countermeasures and drone defense capabilities. Officials said the goal is to reassure commercial shipping and uphold freedom of navigation in the strategically vital waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes, has seen reduced traffic following the recent Iran war, which has disrupted shipping routes and pushed global energy prices higher.

HMS Dragon, an air-defense destroyer already en route to the Middle East, will form part of the UK’s expanded presence in the region. Britain currently maintains more than 1,000 personnel there, including counter-drone units and fast jet squadrons supporting ongoing defensive operations.

The announcement comes as Western and regional powers seek to stabilize maritime security in one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints, where tensions have escalated significantly in recent months.
