  • The Kuwaiti Ministry of Defense intercepted multiple hostile drones over national airspace early Sunday morning.
  • The incident follows a pattern of recent violations testing a fragile ceasefire between Iran and the United States.
  • Kuwait has faced a series of aerial threats throughout early 2026, including several strikes on Kuwait International Airport.

Brigadier General Saud Abdulaziz Al-Otaibi, official spokesperson for the Kuwaiti Ministry of Defense, announced that the armed forces detected a "number of hostile drones" within Kuwaiti airspace at dawn on Sunday.

Military units responded to the intrusion in accordance with "established procedures", standard military terminology for active interception or electronic jamming.

While the Ministry did not specify the origin of the drones, it affirmed the military’s "full readiness" to protect critical infrastructure and the safety of citizens.

Shaky truce

The drone breach occurs against the backdrop of a broader regional conflict involving Iran, 'Israel', and the United States, which erupted in February 2026.

While a US-brokered ceasefire was reached on April 8, it has been repeatedly tested by maritime incidents in the Persian Gulf and aerial incursions across the GCC.

Airport targeting: Kuwait International Airport has been a primary target for Iranian-linked drone strikes since February 28, causing significant damage to Terminal 1 and a total suspension of commercial flights for several weeks.

Wider escalation: Just hours before the Kuwaiti interception, a commercial cargo vessel traveling from Abu Dhabi was hit by a drone near Qatar’s Mesaieed Port, highlighting a coordinated uptick in regional tensions.
