  • Trump says US will launch “Project Freedom” to escort commercial ships out of the Strait of Hormuz, calling it a humanitarian move amid regional tensions and talks with Iran.

US President Donald Trump has announced a new initiative to escort foreign commercial vessels out of the Strait of Hormuz, describing the move as a humanitarian effort amid ongoing regional tensions.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said multiple countries had asked Washington to help free ships stranded in the strategic waterway, stressing that many of the vessels belong to nations not involved in the conflict.

“We will guide their ships safely out of these restricted waterways,” Trump wrote, adding that the operation, dubbed “Project Freedom”, is set to begin Monday morning, Middle East time.

Trump said the effort is intended to assist “neutral and innocent bystanders” affected by the situation, noting that some ships are running low on food and essential supplies for their crews.

He also indicated that US representatives are engaged in what he described as “very positive discussions” with Iran, raising the possibility of broader diplomatic progress.

At the same time, Trump warned that any interference with the operation would be met with force, saying such actions “will, unfortunately, have to be dealt with forcefully.”

The announcement comes amid heightened tensions in and around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route, where disruptions have impacted commercial traffic and raised concerns over maritime security.
