Swiss parliament rejects recognition of Palestine

The Swiss House of Representatives voted Tuesday against a proposal calling for the recognition of the State of Palestine.
Lawmakers rejected the motion by 116 votes to 66, with 11 abstentions.
The decision aligns with the position previously adopted by the Council of States, Switzerland’s upper house, or Senate.
The National Council endorsed the recommendation of its Foreign Policy Committee, which said that the necessary conditions for such recognition have not been met under current circumstances.
Switzerland maintains that unilateral recognition should occur only within the framework of a negotiated two-state solution, rather than as a standalone action.
Switzerland has historically supported a two-state solution to the ‘Israeli’-Palestinian conflict. However, it does not formally recognize Palestine as a sovereign state.
Previous parliamentary attempts, including initiatives in 2024 and 2025, have similarly failed to alter this policy.
